Econometric Analysis of Continuous Time Models: A Survey of Peter Phillips’ Work and Some New Results

چکیده

Econometric analysis of continuous time models has drawn the attention of Peter Phillips for nearly 40 years, resulting in many important publications by him. In these publications he has dealt with a wide range of continuous time models and econometric problems, from univariate equations to systems of equations, from asymptotic theory to finite sample issues, from parametric models to nonparametric models, from identification problems to estimation and inference problems, from stationary models to nonstationary and nearly nonstationary models. This paper provides an overview of Peter Phillips’ contributions in the continuous time econometrics literature. We review the problems that have been tackled by him, outline the main techniques suggested by him, and discuss the main results obtained by him. Based on his early work, we compare the performance of two asymptotic distributions in a simple setup. Results indicate that the in-fill asymptotics significantly outperforms the long-span asymptotics. JEL Classifications: C22, C32

The harmful effects of chronic high inflation in the economy led the governments and country’s monetary authorities seek to reduce or eliminate this phenomenon. Therefore it’s very important to predict how inflation moves providing an appropriate economic model is a crucial factor to forecast inflation, so on. In this regard, in the present research, we attempt to generate a appropriate model f...

Three New Systematic Approaches for Computing Heffron-Phillips Multi-Machine Model Coefficients (RESEARCH NOTE)

This paper presents three new systematic approaches for computing coefficient matrices of the Heffron-Phillips multi-machine model (K1, …, K6). The amount of computations needed for conventional and three new approaches are compared by counting number of multiplications and divisions. The advantages of new approaches are: (1) their computation burdens are less than 73 percent of that of convent...

A Specification Test for Nonlinear Nonstationary Models By

We provide a limit theory for a general class of kernel smoothed U-statistics that may be used for specification testing in time series regression with nonstationary data. The test framework allows for linear and nonlin-ear models with endogenous regressors that have autoregressive unit roots or near unit roots. The limit theory for the specification test depends on the self-intersection local ...

Rejoinder: A Selective Overview of Nonparametric Methods in Financial Econometrics

I am very grateful to the Executive Editor, Edward George, for organizing this stimulating discussion. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Professors Peter Phillips, Jun Yu, Michael Sørensen, Per Mykland and Lan Zhang for their insightful and stimulating comments, touching both practical, methodological and theoretical aspects of financial econometrics and their applications in asset...

Nonlinear econometric models with cointegrated and deterministically trending regressors

This paper develops an asymptotic theory for a general class of nonlinear nonstationary regressions, extending earlier work by Phillips and Hansen (1990) on linear cointegrating regressions. The model considered accommodates a linear time trend and stationary regressors, as well as multiple I(1) regressors. We establish consistency and derive the limit distribution of the nonlinear least squares...
